We are the proud foster parents of 12 little eggs! Inside these eggs....yolk, egg white and tiny embryos that are 14 days old! On Friday March 27th or Saturday March 28th we will anxiously wait and watch little chicks hatch out!

There is a company that rents out incubators and then you can buy chicken, duck or quail eggs! We bought ours pre-started so the wait time for Kelly was not so long! This is how they were delivered:

You have to rotate/turn them 2-3 times a day. So, we put an X on one side and an O on the other to help us keep track! We also numbered our eggs 1-12 so we could do some observations and make guesses on which one will hatch first and last.

Although there are 12 eggs, only about 6 or 7 will hatch. There are a lot of factors that decide whether or not the embryo will be healthy enough to make it the full 21 days. I made a journal for Kelly and had her guess at how many eggs she thought would hatch. Her guess was 6. We will have to wait and see!

Once born, we will leave the chicks in the incubator for 24 hours. This gives them time to dry, fluff and rest. After that we will transfer them to their new home....a cardboard box lined with newspaper and paper towels. They will have water to drink, chicken feed to eat and a small desk lamp to keep them warm. 10 days after they hatch we will say good-bye to our friends and return them to the place we bought them from!
